Cosquer Cave Marseille: a unique prehistoric site in the world
The Cosquer Cave is one of the most fascinating prehistoric sites in Europe.
Located in the calanques, it has the unusual feature of being largely submerged under the sea, which makes it inaccessible to the public.
Today, it is thanks to its faithful reproduction, Cosquer Méditerranée, that visitors can discover this exceptional treasure.
An exceptional discovery in the heart of the calanques
The cave was discovered in 1985 by diver Henri Cosquer. Its entrance lies more than 30 metres below sea level.
Works more than 20,000 years old
The Cosquer Cave contains more than 500 prehistoric works: paintings, engravings and handprints. Among the depictions, some are particularly rare: seals, penguins, horses and bison.
Cosquer Méditerranée: a spectacular reproduction
A reproduction was created and opened to the public in 2022: Cosquer Méditerranée, located near the Mucem.
The visit takes place aboard mobile pods, allowing visitors to faithfully discover the volumes of the cave and its artworks.
An immersive, educational experience
The tour includes educational areas, scientific explanations and historical context.
