The MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) is undoubtedly the most remarkable construction undertaken for Marseille Provence 2013.
This genuine 21st-century museum first opened its doors in June 2013, taking over from the Musée National des Arts et Traditions Populaires (MNATP), which closed in Paris in 2005.
A museum dedicated to Mediterranean cultures
Located at the entrance to the Old Port, the MuCEM brings together nearly a million works and objects devoted to Mediterranean cultures.
Given the size of its structure, it offers a wide range of activities:

An iconic contemporary architecture
Beyond its cultural richness, the MuCEM is also a major architectural landmark.
Built according to the plans of Rudy Ricciotti, together with Roland Carta, the building offers walkways open to the outside, with views over the sea, the fort and the port.
The concrete used incorporates the latest scientific innovations. The perforated facades let in light, air and even sea scents, creating a unique atmosphere.
The main building stands out for its geometric shape: a perfect 72-metre square, containing a second 52-metre square.
Three complementary sites for a complete experience
The MuCEM covers 40,000 m² and is made up of three distinct spaces, each offering its own atmosphere.
The J4: 15,000 m²
The new museum, built on the former J4 harbour pier, is the heart of the MuCEM.
- a 1,600 m² reference space on the first level, presenting the permanent collection
- a 1,500 m² space for temporary exhibitions
- a 500 m² space for seasonal exhibitions
These spaces explore the societies, cultures and territories of the Mediterranean world.
Fort Saint-Jean: 15,000 m²
Fort Saint-Jean offers exhibition galleries around the themes of festivities and performance.
Visitors can also enjoy a suspended Mediterranean garden, offering an exceptional view over the port and the sea.
The Conservation and Resource Centre: 10,000 m²
Located in the Belle de Mai district, this innovative centre is dedicated to the conservation of the collections.
Open to the public, it offers insight into the scientific and heritage work carried out around the artworks.
