Perched at 149 metres above sea level, Notre-Dame de la Garde overlooks the city and is one of Marseille’s most powerful symbols. Visible from many points across the city, it attracts visitors and pilgrims every year.
An ancient origin on the Garde hill
It was in 1214 that Father Pierre obtained permission to build a chapel dedicated to Mary on the “La Garde” hill.
This first building marks the beginning of the site’s history, which gradually became an important place of devotion for locals and sailors.
A strategic, fortified site
In 1536, a fort was built around this Romanesque chapel to withstand the arrival of Charles V’s troops.
From the Renaissance onward, visits to the site increased sharply, leading to the construction of a second nave of around 100 m². This development reflects the growing importance of the site in Marseille’s religious and popular life.
The construction of today’s basilica
In 1853, the construction of the current basilica was entrusted to architect Henri Espérandieu. He chose a Romano-Byzantine style, characterised by its volumes, domes and decoration.
The upper church stands out notably for its magnificent mosaic flooring, while the square bell tower reaches 41 metres in height.
In 1867, the monumental statue of the “Virgin and Child”, in gilded copper, was installed at the top. Standing 11.2 metres tall, it overlooks the city and reinforces the protective role attributed to the basilica.
Inside, numerous ex-votos bear witness to popular devotion. Hung between the pillars or on the walls, they form a genuine collection of folk art, unique of its kind.
A place alive in the hearts of Marseille locals
In the early 20th century, a funicular provided quick access to the basilica. It stopped operating several decades ago, but access remains possible today by various means.
Since 2001, after seven years of renovation, the basilica has regained its full splendour.
In the hearts of Marseille locals, the silhouette of the “Bonne Mère” is inseparable from the city. The expression “Oh! Bonne Mère!” still echoes through the streets, particularly around the Old Port, proof of the deep attachment locals feel for this monument.
