Cité Radieuse Marseille: a pioneering vision of housing
The Cité Radieuse, listed as a historic monument, is one of the most iconic works by architect Le Corbusier.
Built between 1947 and 1952, it embodies an innovative vision of collective housing and is today a true symbol of modern architecture.
A response to the post-war housing crisis
Following the bombings of the Second World War, Marseille suffered from a severe housing shortage.
The State then entrusted Le Corbusier with designing a housing unit capable of addressing this urgent need.
The Cité Radieuse was thus born with:
- 337 apartments
- a height of 56 metres
- a layout designed for collective living
Initially, it was intended for civil servants and war victims.
A unique “vertical city”
Nicknamed the “maison du fada” (madman’s house) by Marseille locals, the Cité Radieuse is based on an innovative concept: creating a genuine village within a building.
It includes:
- interior streets
- shops
- a hotel
- a nursery school
- sports facilities
The Modulor and architecture designed for people
Le Corbusier designed the Cité Radieuse based on the Modulor, a 1.83 m human silhouette used as a reference for proportions.
This system allows spaces to be adapted to human scale, making the architecture both functional and harmonious.
The rooftop terrace and the MaMo: art and panorama
The rooftop terrace is one of the building’s most impressive features.
Today it is home to the MaMo, a contemporary art centre conceived by Ora Ito. This unique open-air space regularly hosts exhibitions by contemporary artists.
An immersive visit at the heart of a living monument
The Cité Radieuse is still inhabited, making it a living, authentic place.
Guided tours let visitors discover a listed apartment, the interior shopping street and the rooftop terrace. These tours are organised by the Marseille Tourist Office.
A major work of world heritage
The Cité Radieuse is among Le Corbusier’s works listed as UNESCO World Heritage, confirming its importance in the history of architecture.
An unmissable visit during your stay in Marseille
The Cité Radieuse is ideal for architecture and design enthusiasts. It can be combined with the Stade Vélodrome, Parc Borély and the Calanques of Marseille.
