Arc de Triomphe in Paris
Arc de Triomphe Paris
The Arc de Triomphe was built between 1806 and 1836 on Place de l’Étoile, now known as Place Charles-de-Gaulle. It is a national monument of great historical significance.
Located at the top of the Champs-Élysées, it is one of Paris’s major landmarks and an unmissable site for visitors.
A monument commissioned by Napoleon I
The construction of the Arc de Triomphe was ordered by Napoleon I, following the Battle of Austerlitz, to pay tribute to the victories of the French armies. This project reflected a desire to glorify the army and leave a lasting mark on the Parisian landscape.
A long and eventful construction
The project underwent several interruptions linked to the political and geopolitical context of the time. The Arc de Triomphe was finally completed under the reign of Louis-Philippe. Its imposing dimensions reflect the ambition of the project:
- 50 metres tall
- 45 metres wide
- 22 metres deep
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Since 1920, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the First World War has stood at the foot of the monument. It pays tribute to all the soldiers who died in combat. Since 1923, a flame of remembrance has been lit and rekindled every evening at 6:30 pm, perpetuating the memory of the fallen.
A unique viewpoint over Paris
The Arc de Triomphe offers an exceptional panoramic view over Paris. From the top, you can admire:
- the Champs-Élysées
- the great avenues radiating from the square
- the capital’s main monuments
The monument stands at the centre of a major historic axis running through Paris.
A rare phenomenon to observe
Interestingly, the sun sets in line with the axis of the Champs-Élysées twice a year. On these occasions, the solar disc appears perfectly aligned beneath the Arc de Triomphe, offering a remarkable spectacle. From Porte Maillot, you can also observe the sunrise along the monument’s axis, notably in February and November.
