The Fort Saint Nicolas
Louis XVI decided to erect the Fort Saint Nicolas not only to protect Marseille harbour but also to control a town which has always been hostile to him. Work was finished in 1664.
In the 19th and 20th centuries the fort was used as a prison. The writer Jean Giono who was arrested in 1939 due to his previous pacifistic publications was emprisoned there. In his novel, Noé, the author recalls this episode of his life.
